About AmericanMedicalBoards.com
AmericanMedicalBoards.com is a free, independent reference for U.S. medical students, residents and international medical graduates (IMGs) who need to know what it takes to get a medical license in each state. Every state medical board sets its own rules, and the details are spread across board websites, statutes and FSMB charts. We bring them together on one map.
What you'll find here
- A page for every state and DC showing how many years of accredited residency the board requires for U.S. and Canadian graduates and for IMGs, with links to the board itself.
- Alternative IMG licensure pathways: the states that let experienced, foreign-licensed physicians practice under a provisional license without repeating a full U.S. residency.
- A physician jobs and salary map with average pay, primary-care shortage data and a hiring-demand index for each state.
- A plain-English licensure guide covering USMLE, ECFMG certification, residency, board certification and visas, plus short answers to common exam and loan questions.
Where the data comes from
We consolidate public sources: state medical board rules and public records, Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) publications, enacted state legislation, U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, HRSA shortage-area data and AAMC workforce reports. Each state page names the as-of date of its sources.
How often it's updated
We check every state's requirements and pending IMG pathway laws once a month and record what changed in the update log. Our editorial policy explains every source, the review process and how we handle corrections. Rules can change between checks, so always confirm with the state medical board before you apply.
